Relocation: Are you really ready to make the “big” move?

Life in Podunkberg, Kansas is really starting to get you down. You have already conquered the tri-county areaand you are ready for someplace a little more challenging. You’re thinking about moving to Los Angeles or maybe even New York.

Here are some questions to ask before you pack up all of your worldly possessions:

1. Do you have friends and family in the area?
2. How strong is the economy and the job market?
3. How will you support yourself?
4. Do you have at least $3,000 saved up?
5. What is the public transportation situation like?
6. How will you get out there?
7. Do you have a solid game plan for how to get established in the “big city?
8. Are you familiar with the major companies and executives in your prospective city?
9. Have you visited the prospective city at least three times?

If you are too broke or too hesitant to move for a summer then consider moving to the “big city” for a season. Living there for a few months will give you an opportunity to learn the layout of the city. Summer is the best time to move for a trial run. Seasonal jobs are easy to come by and it’s easier to get by on a shoestring when the weather is warm.

Of course there are drawbacks to using the summertime trial run relocation method:

1. Summertime tourism can give a city the illusion of being heavily populated.
2. The job market can seem more prosperous during the summertime than it actually is the other nine months out of the year.
3. Unexpectedly harsh winters. (Alaina, whom resides in Minnesota can personally attest to the crappiness of harsh winters)

Relocating to the big city can be quite an adjustment for anyone. It’s important to plan your move carefully and to thoroughly research your prospective city.
